What is a hysterectomy?
A hysterectomy is the removal of all or part of the uterus via surgery. In some cases, it may also include the removal of the cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes and the surrounding structures. This procedure may be performed for a number of health-related reasons. Uterine fibroids that cause pain, bleeding or other issues is a common reason for this surgery to be performed.
How is it performed?
At Bebla UroGYN & Aesthetics in Modesto, Dr. Sargon Bebla uses minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques. These involve making very small incisions, resulting in a procedure that’s less traumatic to the body. You can expect a quicker recovery than with traditional surgery. Additionally, patients who are unable to have open surgery may be candidates for a laparoscopic procedure.
What is laparoscopic surgery?
Laparoscopic surgery, including da Vinci surgery, is one of the most technologically advanced forms of treatment available for women in need of hysterectomies. A micro-sized television camera and tiny instruments are inserted through small incisions. Dr. Bebla uses a monitor to guide his movements. In da Vinci surgery, the entire process is directed using a console and television monitor as the robotic instruments do their work. The da Vinci surgical system gives the doctor very precise control for some of the best results.
What is a vaginal hysterectomy?
A vaginal hysterectomy involves removing the uterus through the vagina. Dr. Bebla separates the cervix from the top of the vagina so that the uterus and cervix may be removed through the vaginal opening. Usually, this procedure has fewer complications and is less traumatic to the body compared to an abdominal hysterectomy. Expect a shorter hospital stay and a faster recovery time.
Am I a candidate for a vaginal hysterectomy?
If your uterus isn’t greatly enlarged and cancer isn’t the issue, Dr. Bebla may consider you a candidate for this surgery. Even if one or both ovaries and the fallopian tubes need to be removed, you may still undergo a vaginal hysterectomy procedure.
What is a partial hysterectomy?
In a partial hysterectomy, the upper part of the uterus is removed, but the cervix remains in place. Dr. Bebla will assess your risk of ovarian cancer and the health of your ovaries and fallopian tubes. They may or may not be removed, depending on your particular situation.
What is a laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy?
A laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy removes the uterus through the abdomen using laparoscopic techniques. It involves making small incisions in the abdomen, which means you won’t need time for your vagina to heal. Dr. Bebla will leave the cervix intact and attached to the upper vagina, so you will experience better pelvic support after surgery.
